Eine Workshop-Band auch an diesem Festival, aber unter wessen Leitung? Für die Jazz Student*innen der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste war Ben LarMar Gay aus Chicago der unumstrittene Favorit. Die Idee begeisterte ihn sofort, und so freuen wir uns auf ihre intensive Auseinandersetzung und Zusammenarbeit. Nach mehrtägigen Proben werden sie das Resultat der Kollaboration auf der Bühne des Mehrspur präsentieren.
Ben LaMar Gay steht für Neugier und Innovation. Der Komponist, Multiinstrumentalist, Sänger und Dichter begeistert das Publikum mit seinem ersten Instrument, dem Kornett. Beachtlich ist sein Gespür für den jeweiligen Kontext, sei es Jazz, Hip-Hop, House, Elektronik, Rock, Avantgarde, Salsa, Latin oder etwas dazwischen. Seit Jahren ist er Mitglied der Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Um ihn schart sich die kreative Szene Chicagos. Und nun trifft seine kreative Energie auf den begeisterten Jazz-Nachwuchs der Schweiz.

Another workshop band is part of this year’s festival—but under whose direction? For the jazz students at the Zurich University of the Arts, Ben LaMar Gay from Chicago was the undisputed favorite. The idea immediately excited him, and we look forward to their intensive engagement and collaboration. After several days of rehearsals, they will present the results of this collaboration on the Mehrspur stage.
Ben LaMar Gay stands for curiosity and innovation. The composer, multi-instrumentalist, singer, and poet captivates audiences with his primary instrument, the cornet. Equally remarkable is his sensitivity to each context, whether jazz, hip-hop, house, electronic music, rock, avant-garde, salsa, Latin, or anything in between. He has been a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians for many years, and the creative scene in Chicago gathers around him. Now, his creative energy meets the enthusiastic young jazz musicians of Switzerland.
