Joe Haider ist ein Urgestein des europäischen Jazz, seit 70 Jahren unterwegs als Pianist, Bandleader, Komponist und Lehrer. Kurz nach dem Konzert am unerhört!-Festival will er seinen 90. Geburtstag feiern. Lange war er Hauspianist im Münchner Jazzclub Domicile, wo er auf internationale Stars wie Johnny Griffin, Benny Bailey und Mark Murphy traf. Als Direktor der Swiss Jazz School Bern bildete er Generationen von Studierenden aus.
Sein aktuelles Projekt ist eine Hommage an den Pianisten Bill Evans, den Wegbegleiter des frühen Miles Davis. Joe Haider spielt im Trio mit dem Bassisten Lorenz Beyeler und dem Schlagzeuger Tobias Friedli Songs aus den New Yorker Village Vanguard Sessions des Bill Evans Trios mit Scott LaFaro und Paul Motian. Deren Konzerte beeinflussten 1961 den Klang vieler Klaviertrios bis hin zu dem von Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock und Jack DeJohnette.
Mit den Stücken aus den Village Vanguard Sessions verneigt sich Joe Haider vor der Moderne des Jazz. Das Programm zeigt aber auch seine Individualität, seine Improvisationskunst und seine Freude an der Interaktion.
Eine Anekdote aus einem Interview der Süddeutschen Zeitung mag seine Kommunikationslust illustrieren: «Unlängst bin ich in Bern im Bus gefahren, alle Leute haben auf ihre Handys gestarrt. Da bin ich aufgestanden und habe gemeint: ‹Ich bin jetzt zu einem Gespräch bereit!› Ist natürlich voll in die Hose gegangen, keine Reaktion.»
Das Konzert des Joe Haider Trios fügt sich ein in eine Reihe von Festival-Highlights in der speziellen Atmosphäre des Gesundheitszentrums für das Alter Bürgerasyl-Pfrundhaus.

Joe Haider is a cornerstone of European jazz, with a career spanning 70 years as pianist, bandleader, composer, and teacher. Shortly after his concert at the unerhört! Festival, he will celebrate his 90th birthday. For many years, he was the house pianist at Munich’s Jazzclub Domicile, where he performed with international stars such as Johnny Griffin, Benny Bailey, and Mark Murphy. As director of the Swiss Jazz School in Bern, he has trained generations of students.
His current project is a tribute to pianist Bill Evans, the early Miles Davis collaborator. Joe Haider performs in a trio with bassist Lorenz Beyeler and drummer Tobias Friedli, presenting pieces from the Bill Evans Trio’s legendary Village Vanguard sessions with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian. These concerts in 1961 shaped the sound of countless piano trios, including that of Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette.
Through these Village Vanguard pieces, Joe Haider pays homage to the modern jazz tradition, while the program also showcases his individuality, improvisational skill, and joy in musical interaction.
An anecdote from an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung illustrates his playful spirit: “Recently I was on a bus in Bern, and everyone was staring at their phones. So I stood up and said, ‘I’m now ready for a conversation!’ Of course, it completely failed – no reaction at all.”
