Joe Sanders zählt zu den vielseitigsten Bassisten des heutigen Jazz. Der aus dem Mittleren Westen stammende Musiker hat auf beiden US-Küsten studiert und gespielt, ist verwurzelt in der Tradition des Genres und zugleich offen für elektronische Klänge. Als Komponist, Bandleader und Pädagoge bewegt er sich mühelos zwischen Szenen, Stilen und Kontinenten. Derzeit in Frankreich lebend, gibt er auch dem europäischen Jazz Impulse. In der New York Times beschrieb ihn der Saxofonist Joshua Redman als «einen der ganz Grossen seiner Generation und einen der aktivsten und am meisten nachgeahmten Musiker der heutigen Szene».
Joe Sanders studierte am Brubeck Institute bei Christian McBride sowie am Thelonious Monk Institute in Los Angeles, das seit 2019 den Namen Herbie Hancocks trägt. In seinem neuen Projekt Parallels spielt Sanders mit Logan Richardson, Seamus Blake und Kendrick Scott. Es ist eine Formation, die in mitreissenden Konzerten den Drive der East-Coast-Jazzszene spüren lässt und dabei einen freien Umgang mit der Jazztradition pflegt. Joe Sanders is one of today’s most versatile jazz bassists. Hailing from the U.S. Midwest, he has studied and performed on both coasts, rooted in the tradition of the genre while remaining open to electronic sounds. As a composer, bandleader, and educator, he moves effortlessly between scenes, styles, and continents. Currently based in France, he also brings fresh impulses to the European jazz scene.
