Der Pianist Vadim Neselovskyi kehrt nach drei Jahren ans unerhört!-Festival zurück. Sein Solokonzert „Odesa: A Musical Walk Through a Legendary City“ erschütterte 2022 im Jahre des russischen Überfalls auf die Ukraine das Publikum im Kulturhaus Helferei. Sein dichtes und intensives Spiel, die donnernden atonalen Explosionen bleiben unvergesslich. Die ursprünglich als Brief an den Vater angelegte Komposition wurde im Krieg zum Widerstandslied wie zur Hommage an seine bedrohte Heimatstadt Odessa.
Neselovskyis neues Werk mit dem Titel «Perseverantia» ist wiederum eine Suite. Diesmal stellt er sein Pianospiel in den Raum dreier Streichinstrumente: Cello, Violine und Viola. In der festgelegten Komposition öffnen sich Fenster für Improvisationen und aleatorische Momente. Neselovskyi sagt, das Stück sei wie ein Film ohne Bilder. Er versteht das Werk als eine Würdigung des Mitgefühls.
Als 17-Jähriger war er mit seinen Eltern 1995 aus Odessa nach Unna bei Dortmund gekommen – drei jüdische Kontingentflüchtlinge, die in Deutschland Aufnahme fanden. Der klassisch ausgebildete Vadim ging dann in die USA, um Jazz zu studieren. Seine erste Solo-CD produzierte 2013 kein Geringerer als der New Yorker Pianist Fred Hersch. Vadim tourte mit Herbie Hancock und Gary Burton. John Zorn lud ihn zu seinem Masada-Projekt ein. Aktuell unterrichtet er an der Berklee School of Music in Boston.

Pianist Vadim Neselovskyi returns to the unerhört! Festival after three years. His 2022 solo concert, “Odesa: A Musical Walk Through a Legendary City,” moved audiences at the Kulturhaus Helferei in the year of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. His dense and intense playing, punctuated by thundering atonal explosions, left a lasting impression. Originally conceived as a letter to his father, the composition became both a song of resistance and a tribute to his endangered hometown of Odessa.
Neselovskyi’s new work, titled Perseverantia, is again a suite. This time, he places his piano in dialogue with three string instruments: cello, violin, and viola. Within the fixed composition, windows open for improvisation and aleatory moments. Neselovskyi describes the piece as “like a film without images” and sees it as a tribute to compassion.

The classically trained Vadim later went to the United States to study jazz. His first solo CD, released in 2013, was produced by none other than New York pianist Fred Hersch. Vadim has toured with Herbie Hancock and Gary Burton, and was invited by John Zorn to join his Masada project. He currently teaches at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
